I started playing golf at the onset of the Covid pandemic. At the time, sports shutting down was a disappointment, however, this gave me the opportunity to focus on playing golf. I played in my first tournament in March 2020 and immediately fell in love with the game. I couldn’t wait to practice and play in more tournaments. I continue to feel that way today and I’m passionate about improving my skills with daily practice and continuous learning about all aspects of the sport.
Early in my 8th grade year I decided I wanted to attend AND play High School golf at Brophy College Preparatory (BCP). Brophy is ranked as one of the top two Catholic & Private High Schools in Arizona, has a 65% acceptance rate, and has repeatedly been one of the top two golf teams in the State of Arizona. My goal was a lofty one for someone who had been playing competitively for less than a year, but I was determined to work as hard as I needed to both inside and outside the classroom to make the Brophy Golf Team.
Over the next several months I was accepted into Brophy and continued to practice and play in tournaments in preparation for tryouts in August. Tryouts finally arrived and I was one of 35 students trying out for three spots. Four days of golf, 9 holes each day with continued cuts until the 3 top finishers are identified at the end of the fourth day. On the fourth day I finished in the top 3 with one senior and one junior taking the other two spots. I immediately felt like part of the team when my teammates started sending me congratulatory notes through instagram. I didn’t realize at the time how much I would enjoy being part of a team.
I love the fact that golf takes thoughtful planning and preparation, decision making, calculated risks and a lot of mental focus. It’s generally a great challenge and I can work on my skills as an individual, but it also allows me to contribute to the team on and off the course. It gives me the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests through the game of golf. My current goal is to play College golf! Much like my original “lofty goal” before high school, I will continue to work hard to attain my goals. I look forward to continued growth as a player and teammate.
